Empowering Women of Ohio Week: March 30-April 3

The Ohio University Women’s Association invites OHIO students and Athens community members to attend Empowering Women of Ohio Week from March 30 through April 3. The schedule for the week is as follows:EWOW

A History of Women at Ohio University

Monday, March 30, 6-8 p.m. at the Multicultural Center in Baker Center

The week begins with a panel discussion on the history of women at Ohio University, which will celebrate Women’s History Month and highlight the experiences of Ohio University women in the past and present. This panel will feature Dr. Katherine Jellison, Professor and Chair of History, Bill Kimok, University Archivist and Records Manager, and OHIO alumna Lois Whealey.

The Grey Area

Tuesday, March 31, 5-7 p.m. at Donkey Coffee 

Tuesday there will be a film screening of The Grey Area, a documentary about the diverse lives of female inmates in a maximum security prison
in Mitchellville, Iowa. This event is closely related to Thursday’s keynote address about women and mass incarceration.

Intersectional Approaches to Sexual Violence

Wednesday, April 1, 6-8 p.m. in Baker 231

Wednesday marks the start of Sexual Assault Awareness month and feature another panel discussion on varied responses to sexual violence. Panelists include: Kelly Cook, Director of My Sister’s Place in Athens, Lana Oweidat, Instructor of Rhetoric and Composition in the Department of English, and Dr. Patty Stokes, Assistant Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

‘Is It Really Like Orange is the New Black?’ Women and Mass Incarceration

Thursday, April 2, 5-6:30 p.m. at the Athena Cinema

Samantha Boch, a corrections nurse at the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction , delivers the keynote address on Thursday. Her degrees are in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Nursing, and she is passionate about the intersections between gender, prison, and health. Boch recently crafted an essay on “Is it Really Like Orange is the New Black?” and will talk directly about her experiences within the women’s prison in Ohio.

Navigating Gendered Double Standards in the Professional World

Friday, April 3, 3-5 p.m. at the Women’s Center 

The week’s events conclude with a workshop on gendered double standards in the professional world. This event provides a space where students can network with women working at the university and in the Athens community about challenges they have faced in their careers.
