USDOE Grant Provides Additional Security at Edwards Accelerator

The Office of Risk Management and Safety has been awarded two grants from the U.S. Department of Energy totaling $210,000 to upgrade security systems at the Konneker Research Center and Edwards Accelerator Laboratory.

“These additional security measures will allow continued research with restricted equipment and will meet or exceed the recommendations of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission,” said Joe Adams, associate vice president of Risk Management and Safety.

The irradiator at Konneker Research Center utilizes radioactive material for use in research, while Edwards Accelerator Laboratory houses an underground accelerator for the study of nuclear reactions.

The added security will include additional access control measures for the research areas, including but not limited to doors, alarms and video surveillance.

The work is expected to be completed this semester.
