County Courier: Giese Gives Schreiner University Syers Lecture

Dr. Loreen Giese, Professor of Shakespeare and early modern drama at Ohio University, was the featured speaker at the Schreiner University Syers Lecture on Oct. 23, reports the Bandera County Courier.

She presented “Uncovering Cruelty in Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and Early Modern London.”

The marriage of Katherine and Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew continues to inspire critical debate about spouses’ gendered roles and how those roles relate to offstage practices in contemporary London. Using rich and provocative newly available court testimonies from late 16th- and early 17th-century London, this talk draws new conclusions about marital cruelty in early modern London and offers a new perspective on the married life of Katherine and Petruchio.

Giese is the author of Courtships, Marriage Customs, and Shakespeare’s Comedies and London Consistory Court Depositions.
