The Rural Sociological Society is a professional social science association that promotes the generation, application, and dissemination of sociological knowledge. The Society seeks to enhance the quality of rural life, communities, and the environment. This website is intended to serve all those interested in rural people and places. Council members are elected each year by the members by a majority vote or appointed by the President.

Anderson also served on the Sociologists for Women in Society Strategic Planning Taskforce, chairing the Long Range Planning Subcommittee during 2012-13. The subcommittee recommended six goals that included widening the focus of SWS national academic collaborations beyond influencing and working with the American Sociological Association and increasing membership and participation of feminist sociologists.
